Lake Alexandrina

Lake Alexandrina is one of the major lakes in South Australia. This lake is adjacent to the coast of the Southern Ocean. This is located just a hundred kilometres south-east from Adelaide. This lake was named after Princess Alexandrina. She is the niece and the successor of King William IV of Ireland and Great Britain. Lake Alexandrina is situated north of Encounter Bay and is just east of Fleurueu Peninsula. The major river that flows towards the Lake Alecandrina is the Murray River. Other rivers that flow to Lake Alexandrina are Finniss Rivers, Angas, and Bremer. All of these are from the southern part of Mount Lofty Rangers. This lake is shallow and has some islands by its southern end.

Lake Albert

Lake Albert is a fresh water lake at the mouth of the Murray River. This lake is filled with water that comes from the Lake Alexandrina near Narrung. This lake is separated by the Narrung Peninsula which is from the salt water Coorong. Meningie is the main and only town near this lake. Lake Albert got its name from the Consort of Queen Victoria, Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha.

Blue Lake

The Blue Lake is located in Mount Gambier, South Australia. This is a very big lake which is situated in anextinct volcanic maar from Mount Gambier maar complex. This is one of the crater lakes in Mount Gambier. There are four crater lakes in Mount Gambier. The other two lakes in Mount Gambier are already dried up 30 to 40 years ago. The last eruption is being debated as 28,000 years ago or 4,300 years ago. If the latter date is correct, then this is the most recent volcanic eruption in the mainland of Australia.

Lake Bonney S.E.

Lake Bonney is one of the major lakes in South Australia. This is a coastal lake which is located in the south east region of South Australia. This lake is close to Adelaide and Millicent. The Canunda National Park is just adjacent to the shore of this lake. There are nearby pulp paper mills that contribute to the pollution which slowly destroys this lake.

Lake Blanche

Lake Blanche has 8 creeks and rivers that flows into it. The five major tributaries of this lake are the Moppa-Collina Channel, Tooncatchyin Creek, Petermorra Creek, Macdonnell Creek, and Strzelecki Creek. The towns and the villages that are close to Lake Blanche are Roxby Downs, Andamooka, and Leigh Creek.

Salt Pans

There are also dry salt pans in South Australia; such as Frome, Torrens, Gregory, Gill, Callabonna, Gairdner and Lake Eyre. Most of these pans are filled during flooding. Most of the times, these salt pans are dry.
